President’s Message

Please remember the next work date which is the first Saturday in August, Aug 4th. There's weeding, planting, moving, fertilizing, mulching, etc., enough to go around-- so come on down.

On August 13th, Bruce Pearson from Tropical World will be speaking on Vertical Gardening. I don't know about you, but I need space desperately and the only place left to go is up. But those of you with acres of space will no doubt find some tips for hiding ugly fences, etc. Please mark you calendar now.

I will also appoint a Nominating Committee, to prepare a slate of officers for 2013. I need 3 people. We also need a Refreshment Chair (in charge of reminding those who signed up that it's their month) and Membership Chair (to maintain the membership list, get badges printed, and work with Denise who has been volunteering at the door). And, last, but not least, a Newsletter Editor. Please step up to help us out.

The September 10th meeting is David Bache from Boynton Botanicals.

Reminder- the October and November meetings are on the FIRST MONDAY not the second, due to holidays observed by the County. The Mounts Auditorium will be closed on the holidays (Columbus Day and Veteran's Day). You won't want to miss the Oct speakers, Mark and Colin Friedrich of Excelsa, who will speak on begonia companion plants. November is Tom Keepin from the Astro Branch in Houston, TX, who is also the ABS branch relations director, who will be doing a hands on unusual planter demonstration which should get your creativity flowing.

We will be participating in the Mounts Fall Plant sale, which is Saturday and Sunday, November 3rd and 4th. Our meeting that month, again, is on Monday, November 5th, due to Veteran's Day falling on our regular meeting day the following week. So it will be a full 3 day weekend of plants. Sign up sheets will be available at the meetings.

With all this going on, I'll be ready for the Holiday Party and Begonia Bingo in December. We will also have the installation of the officers for 2013.

See you at 8:30 a.m. on August 4th, for fun weeding and mulching in our beautiful garden. I know it's hot out, but many hands will get us out before the weather becomes impossible.

“Vertical Landscaping” by Bruce Pearson

Bruce is the owner of Tropical World Nursery, Boynton Beach and Loxahatchee. One of gardening’s newer trends, vertical gardening adds a new dimension to the landscape while using a relatively small footprint – something to think about if you are running out of space for your begonias. Bruce will show pictures of vertical gardens and will also bring some examples for us to see.

Locally there is a large vertical garden located on the west wall of Saks in Palm Beach at the corner of Worth Avenue and South County Road. Several types of plants make up this huge vertical garden and create an interesting design through the use of different textures and colored hues of plants. The watering is all on a timer and the plants are arranged strategically each in their own little area. And for a mere $200,000 you too can be the first on your block to have one!

AROUND THE GARDEN

*Begonia seeds and cuttings put down earlier this spring and summer are really beginning to grow now. Some of the seedlings are showing interesting patterns so hopefully a nice leaf will develop once they mature.

*The Begonia Garden located at the Mounts has grown so well in the last 8 or 9 weeks. We continue to take donations as there is still room to plant. See you all there at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, August 4, to add more plants and groom the existing begonias.

*The Mounts Garden is hosting the Shady Affair Plant Sale again this year. It will be held Saturday and Sunday beginning September 15 at 9:00 a.m.

*Mounts has also started their Summer Lecture Series. Call the office for topics and times. For a quick show and tell, everyone bring the biggest begonia leaf they have grown over the summer. Bring some extra leaves if anyone wishes to do a leaf exchange. It is still prime time to do cuttings.

Bring a friend to the meeting!! See you next week.
