President’s Message

MY FIRST PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

I would like to thank all the members who voted for my presidency. While I was a Master Gardener up in New York for 15 years and worked with many different zone 6 flowers, my retirement to Florida proved I knew nothing about this time zone! So I took the Florida Master Gardener Course six years ago. I am amazed that I had so much to learn and am still learning, especially about begonias. I know I am surrounded in this Begonia Society with many, many very knowledgeable people upon whom I will need to call upon for assistance in the future. I hope every one of the 58 or so people who attended our December meeting and Begonia Bingo had a good time. The food was excellent and there was a nice buzz in the air. Thanks to Nancy and Virginia for making up the ham and the turkey respectfully, and all who contributed the accompanying foods. Everyone left with at least one begonia as a gift of the Begonia Society of the Palm Beaches. We bought the plants from Harmony Begonias and Excelsa gardens which were kind enough to transport the plants down to their nursery saving us a six hour round trip to pick them up. Cooperation is a blessing. For next year we have established some objectives for the year:

1. Increase membership
2. Increase attendance at monthly meetings
3. Increase attendance at our garden Tours and work sessions

And speaking of Garden Tours, our first one will be on Monday Martin Luther King Day, January 21. Please put it on your calendars.

See you at the next meeting.

January Program

“Beautiful Begonia Gardens” by Joel Crippen

Joel is a horticuluralist at Mounts Botanical Garden. His knowledge of plants is legendary and his ability for design and execution is clear to see in the updated Gardens at Mounts.

If you remember the pre-hurricane Begonia Garden at Mounts, you will be thrilled to know that the Begonia Society has planted a new shade garden, tucked under the palm on the south side of Mounts. Joel has agreed to work with two of the Begonia Society's finest garden designers and gardeners, Johanna Kiston and Doris Happel, to showcase begonias alongside other shade loving plants. Be sure to come and see what the pros recommend, and learn about the begonias that grow best here.
