The begonia Society of the Palm Beach Garden at the Mounts

On Saturday February 2nd Sandy, Frances, Patrick Dempsey, Emily Dempsey and Ed were able to work in cleaning up our dedicated Begonia Garden. It looks better as each month passes and plants fill in. Our next garden clean up party will be Saturday March 2nd. If you come at 8:30 AM you can sign up at the shop for a free sandwich. Emily Dempsey has graciously accepted to co-ordinate work sessions in requesting mulch and fertilizer. The Club membership voted unanimously to contribute $200.00 toward the purchase of a dedicated sign for the garden. Johanna has written up 200 words to appear on the sign. When the sign is completed we will designate a formal date for the Dedication Ceremony. All Club members will be invited.

President’s Message

Frances did an outstanding write up of our Auction. "The auction was a big success!! Thanks first of all to Charles who brought us 42 beautiful and unusual plants from Harmony-not to mention that they were HUGE! He did his magic again as our auctioneer and we all learned a lot about begonias, gesneriads and other plants in the process. The average Bid was $30.75 with high bids of $52.00 for the Tim Anderson unnamed hybrid "Island Magic". We had one new family sign up as members. There were 3 guests. 30 paddles were assigned and 18 attendees went home with plants. The net profit from the Auction was $1200.35."

I would personally like to thank everyone who chipped in to help. Nancy and Maria helped Frances keep track of the bids and helped with check-out. Sandy printed up the bid sheets for the Silent auction, manned the membership desk, and sent a reminder to all members. Virginia was a great runner and delivered plants. Johanna helped Charles set up; Donnie for volunteering to be Refreshment Chair and coordinating a wonderful array of delicious snacks. The Palm Beach Bonsai Society let us borrow their auction paddles. Many hands make light work and I believe a good night was had by all.

Propagation Party at Doris'
If you missed the February 16th propagation party at Doris' you missed a TREAT! Her begonias were in outstanding bloom. Doris is such a generous hostess and is eager to share her knowledge as well as her begonia clippings with commentary as well. It is a pleasure to see how she uses begonias in her landscaping. Every time I visit her garden for propagation I learn something new. Put it on your calendar for Doris' next propagation party Saturday March 16th at 9:30 AM. Directions to her home will be given out at our next meeting on March 11th.

March Program

Craig Morell "A Bag of Begonia Tricks"
Craig Morell, horticulturist of Pinecrest Gardens in Miami, will tell us about his Begonia Bag of Tricks

Craig has transformed the 1936 Parrot Jungle into the beautiful Pinecrest Gardens. From the 10 foot high everblooming begonias at the entrance to the gardens to the begonias on the rocks in the streams, Craig has planted many begonias. One of our most experienced and entertainingly opinionated landscape gardeners, Craig knows all the tricks. And he is willing to share them

Meeting Minutes for February, 2013

Call to Order and Greetings

President Ed Whalen called the meeting to order at 7:30 p.m. He thanked Lee Statkewicz for keeping the building open and to Donnie Brown and otheres for generously supplying refreshments.

Old Business

Ed spoke about the last work day in the begonia garden at Mounts on Saturday, February 2. The beds were weeded and edged. Johanna is working on 200 words for a plaque to be placed in the begonia garden. Virginia moved that $200 be given to Mounts for producing the plaque. Sandy seconded, and all voted in favor. Members were reminded of the need for monthly help in the garden. Anyone arriving by 8:45 a.m. can sign up for a free sandwich for lunch; water is also available, compliments of Mounts.

New Business

Saturday, February 16 will be the first of two potting parties at Doris Happel’s home. Anyone planning to attend should sign up so we will know how many to expect. Please bring plastic bags for collecting cuttings, and flats for carrying potted plants home. We will start at 9:30 a.m. Doris’ address is 1958 Anderson Lane, Palm Springs. Another potting party will be held on Saturday, March 16.

Mounts Board member Paton White reported that the Board will meet with the PBC Board of County Commissioners and present a petition requesting that the name Mounts Botanical Garden be changed to The Palm Beach Botanical Garden at Mounts and asked that Begonia Society members support this effort by signing the petition.

Nancy Cohen reported that next month’s program will be given by Craig Morrell from Pinecrest Gardens. He is a proficient begonia grower and very entertaining speaker.

Nancy Cohen explained the discount members would receive at the auction.

Meeting was adjourned.

Respectfully submitted,
Sandy Sklar
Recording Secretary
