Due to a health issue our October speaker could not make it and Pat Lindsey was gracious enough to fill in to speak about orchids to include in among our begonia gardens. It proved to be an informative program.
During our November meeting we will be having a pot sale for appropriate pots to enter into competition at the Tampa convention in March. We hope to have at least 20 entrees from our Club since we are the largest Club in Florida. Charles Jaros will also speak to us about how to prepare our begonias for a Convention.
And we would like to remind you that the November meeting starts our membership drive for our 2014 membership for our
club. We will also be having elections for the Board for the 2014 Year.
Charles Jaros: "Grow and Groom Begonias-And How To Win Prizes"
Charles Jaros, past president of the American Begonia Society and top prize winning begonia grower and shower, will tell us how to GROW AND GROOM BEGONIAS—AND HOW TO WIN PRIZES! The ABS Annual Convention will be held in Tampa in March—now is the time to start grooming your plants for the show. ABS Convention prizes are always fabulous and the competition is keen. We will give a plant to each BSPB member who attends this November meeting, to grow and show at the Convention.
Call to Order and Greetings
President Ed Whalen called the meeting to order at 7:30 p.m. Ed greeted members and guests. Guests included Bob Perry, Sharon Lowe, Bonnie Wall, Lorraine Wofford, and Debra Northsea.
Treasurer's Report Frances gave the Treasurer's report.
Ed updated members about the Begonia Garden Dedication. The latest word is that it will be held late in January at the same time that the Garden of Well Being will be dedicated. Nancy Johanna and Doris wrote up names and characteristics of all types of begonias for labels and they have also wrote up a storyboard. It hasn’t been approved yet.
Tom Hewitt interviewed Ed about begonias for Florida Gardening magazine, so we can watch for that article in the future.
The next meeting will be on November 4th. (The 11th is Veterans Day and the Mounts facilities will be closed for a county holiday.) November is our membership drive. It would be great if everyone who should renew by the end of the year does so in November because we have the holiday party in December.
The meeting was adjourned and speaker Pat Lindsay was introduced. Pat took the place of Bud Martin who had to cancel at the
last minute. Bravo to Pat!
The meeting was adjourned at 7:45 p.m. Our host Marta gave a tour of Smarty Plants nursery.
