Our May meeting featured Rick Schoellhorn from Alachua, Florida. Rick is a long-time grower and plant lover who has gradually gravitated to growing and working with begonias. He discussed his own successes and experiments with these wonderful plants and everyone enjoyed his presentation.
The board has recently met to discuss plans for meetings that will be coming up and we have a full and impressive list of forthcoming speakers including Charles Jaros who will be our July guest, Craig Morel from Pinecrest Gardens and Freda Holley, hybridizer extraordinaire.
Our June speaker will be Gregory Sytch who drives here from Port Richey on Florida's west coast. We are all quite excited about this meeting because he brings with him many plants that he has grown and will sell to us.
When Charles comes here in July he will be bringing six-packs of plants that we will have the opportunity to buy and share with one another. Subsequently we will be able to determine who was the most successful grower for each...a "challenge" growing opportunity.
In August we hope to visit a grower in the area...details to be announced very shortly. Stay tuned, and we hope to see you at the next meeting.

Rick’s presentation is “Begonias in the Deep South”. He suggested a list of Begonias that would be best suited for Florida growing. A few examples are : Caribbean King, Caribbean Queen, Bashful Bandit, U509. He talked about many ways of finding Begonias – Mail Order, local nursery, societies. If the begonia is grown from a seed or from cuttings, finding the right plant for the right place in the garden.Respectfully submitted,
