It was good to see so many of you including several guests at our annual auction which was a huge success thanks to our always sensational auctioneer, Charles Jaros who selected gorgeous plants for us. Many were varieties new to the group including several totally red leaved "quasi-rexes" and there were even some gesneriads! In addition to the main auction we also had a "silent" auction featuring many smaller editions of the same plants. Since spring is coming soon, all of us can start to propagate leaves and cuttings from our new acquisitions and ultimately share these beautiful specimens with others.
Doris Happel will be hosting a begonia propagation party at her home on Saturday Feb. 21 at 9:30. The following week, Palm Hammock Orchid Estate is having a festival at which many of their best and newest hybrids will be available for purchase. The festival will be Friday, Feb. 27 and Saturday, Feb. 28. Please email me or Virginia Jens if you would like to attend and need a ride.
We are planning a group trip in late March to Excelsea nursery and Gene Joyner's Unbelievable Acres. Details will be discussed at our next meeting which will be on March 9, agenda to be announced shortly. And please bring a plant to "swap".....something you would be proud of. Also, please bring a photograph of any of your "special" begonias that are now in bloom...... This will help our newest members in identifying some of their plants and the photos can supplement our "swap" and raffle tables. See you in March.
President Suellen Solodar called the meeting to order at 7:30pm.
Suellen announced this was a very educational and special evening with loads of entertainment, enjoying the auction and that we go home with at least one or more begonia plants.
Thanks to Lee Statkewicz for getting to the building early to hold the room for our meeting.
