Meeting Minutes for June 13, 2016

President Patrick Dempsey called the meeting to order at 7:30pm.

Thanks to Lee Statkewicz for getting to the building early to hold the room for our meeting.

Thanks to everyone that brought refreshments: Brenda Lines, Di Loveland, Susan Roberts and Petra Russell.

Patrick announced guests: Ira and Phyllis Weiss, Jeanielle Schmudt, Sally Seftenberg, David Schere, Patricia McBennett, Robert and Barbara Covell, Jerry Perkins.

Treasurer’s report was given by Frances Drescher, reporting $4,654.09 in the bank.

Patrick welcomed New members: Ira and Phyllis Weiss, Eleana Hollender and Vicky Alleyne.

Patrick announced we are looking for a copy of B. Lynda Evans it was displayed at the 2014 Tampa ABS convention.

New Business:

Suellen announced 2016 ABS convention starts the day after Labor Day Sept 6-11 Ayres Hotel, Los Angeles, California.

Virginia Jens gave a overview of visit to the West Regional conference in Dallas Texas. Ft Worth Botanical Garden. There is the largest collection of plants in the US. They specialize in Species and Hybrids. Charles Jaros was one of the speakers.

Virginia announced if you are looking for a binder to keep your old Begonia magazines, as supplier is being contacted. Look out for upcoming issues on this subject in the Begonian magazine.

Patrick announced National Garden Bureau awarded: 2016 Year of the Begonia

Ed gave review of Master Gardener’s graduation. Master gardener’s are interested in Begonias.

Patrick introduced our speaker Gregory Sycth a middle school teacher in Pasco County located in New Port Richey Florida.

Greg is the ABS Horticulture Correspondent, founder and President of the West Coast branch of ABS.

Greg describes himself as a hybridizer, he won ABS 2000 hybrid of the year.

His in depth presentation was on Hybrids and growing Landscape Begonias, he provided tricks of the trade in growing and caring for Begonias, also provided handouts.

Some of Greg’s recommendation are B. Hybrid Bashful Dancer, Alligator Alley, Cowardly Lion, Redington shores, U508, Island Magic, are good landscape plants. U508 flowers all year long.

For fertilizer Greg recommends go to Sprinkler warehouse.com

He also recommends Miracle Grow Shake and Feed Time release Citrus 13-7-13

Use orchid fertilizer for fertilizing.

Use 6-30-30 and 20-20-20 for blooming plants.

There will be a Begonia workshop this Saturday 6/18 in the garden at Mounts, pruning and potting plants for Fall plant sale.
