November Program

Many people in the tropics use begonias for food or medicine as they travel through the jungles and mountains of South America, the West Indies, China, Indonesia, East Africa, Mexico, Java, and Trinidad.

Don Miller will be speaking about “Begonias, the Beautiful Herb — Begonias for Food and Medicine”. Don has grown begonias for many years and contributes his knowledge volunteering at the Ft. Worth Botanic Garden, speaking at conventions, and at many begonia branches. He is also bringing some rare and new begonias with him. You will be amazed!

BEGONIA SOCIETY OF THE PALM BEACHES MINUTES OF OCTOBER 2, 2017

President Patrick Dempsey called the meeting to order at 7:30pm.

Refreshments : Patrick thanked everyone that brought refreshments.

Patrick welcomed guests Connie Keller, Louise Bing, Maury Cain.

Johanna will be working with nominating committee Anne and Beverly for next year’s officers. There is question raised is there a 2 year limit on some of the committee, for officers there is a 2 year limit.

Patrick gave report that the Begonia garden at Mounts needs reconstruction and plants added, as the garden suffered damage with hurricane Irma. We need to reestablish the plants selective pruning will need to be done to plants in garden. Soil and fertilizer will need to be purchased for the garden beds, we need this before the Mounts plant sale in November. Suellen donated a bag of fertilizer.

Treasurer’s report was given by Sandra Sklar for Frances Drescher reporting $5,536.01 in the bank.

Speaker for November will be Don Miller coming in from Ft Worth Texas. Don’s program will be Begonia that are edible and for medicinal uses.

November’s meeting will be the 1st Monday in November.

December’s meeting we will have Begonia bingo theme along with the Holiday Dinner 2nd week in December.

Mounts plant sale is the 1st week in November.

A sign up sheet was passed around for volunteers to work the plant sale. Friday is set up, Saturday and Sunday is plant sale, we will have over 100 plants for sale.

A workshop will be held the 2nd Saturday in November we will be putting in elevations for the new beds, A new configuration with rocks, also mentioned we will learn how to make a Kokedoma we will do that in one of our workshops.

This evening’s meeting will be a general discussion given by Suellen on Cane Begonia’s, how they grow and what will work in your garden.

Virginia Jens donated books and other items to the society.

There are different types of Begonias, Superba, Mallet and all others.

We learned about Cane’s, and different varieties they love light and tolerate some sun. They have long stems with slightly swollen joints that resemble bamboo. They are spotty and some have textures.

Suellen brought plants from her collection and gave tips on growing medium and explained each type of variety . We learned a lot, very informative meeting on growing and caring for different begonia types.
